Coventry Climax Firepump Conversion
Here's a brief run down on how i converted a Climax FWA type Firepump into an automotive use engine.
Original parts used:
Block, crankshaft, oil pump housing, timing chest, timing chain, distributor drive housing, jack shaft and other small odds and ends
Parts replaced or aquired:
Cylinder head, valve springs, intake valves, valve shims, oil pump gears, FWB con rods, FWA flywheel, steel timing gear, alloy crankshaft pulley, steel backplate, pilot bushing, FWA/B/E twin SU intake manifold, twin H4 SU carbs, Lucas 23D distributor, center main cap strap
Modifications done:
Center main cap machined flat to accept strap, fittings fabricated to allow an external oil filter, rear crankshaft scroll machined off to allow lip seal, cylinder head shaved .040", intake valves replaced for larger ones, generator mount plate welded to cylinder head, spacer made for oil pump to allow the use of the taller FWA gears, exhaust manifold fabricated
Assembly was pretty straight forward, other than I goofed and miss-timed the camshaft. The cam runs in the opposite direction to crank rotation, and I of course had it timed going the same way as the crank. It just barely ran on the test stand. Now corrected it runs like a top.
